When it comes to promoting the professions to the public at large, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) is the main event. May is also a time when the larger community—media, consumers and allied professionals—are primed to receive information about our work. BHSM sets the scene for our collective voices to generate greater impact.
However, practically speaking, it’s also a busy time—whether you’re working in a school, in a health care facility or in private practice. The pre-summer rush gets underway and finding time for extra commitments can be difficult.
ASHA will engage in national media and consumer outreach to the benefit of the professions all month long, but we also offer low-effort, fun and effective ways for you to get involved. Here are some of the highlights:
Results of a new poll examining ASHA members’ opinions about parental knowledge of the early warning signs of communication disorders and the benefits of early treatment will be the subject of a national television and radio media tour headlined by ASHA 2018 President Elise Davis-McFarland, and Audiology Advisory Council Chair Charles Bishop. This is part of a renewed public push for ASHA’s early identification campaign Identify the Signs.
ASHA also will be unveiling a new broadcast public service announcement (PSA) for the campaign. Keep your eyes out for the poll results and PSA—follow us on social media and Leader Live!—and share our materials to spread the word about the importance of early intervention by audiologists and speech-language pathologists.
Week 1 kicks off with the new polling results and PSA on early identification, along with lots of supporting materials. We’ll also release shareable content on speech/language disorders in schools that week. Here’s a look at the other topics of focus this BHSM:
- Week 2 (May 6-12): Hearing disorders in school-aged children
- Week 3 (May 13-19): Swallowing disorders in adults
- Week 4 (May 20-26): Older Americans and falls
Social media contest and shareables
Speaking Up For Communication is ASHA’s popular BHSM social media contest. Members who sign up for this free program receive two to three e-mails a week with eye-catching social media shareables on any, or all, of the four weekly topics above (you choose what you receive).
