Another new television comedy focuses on a family navigating the world with a child with special needs. Netflix recently ordered an eight-episode season of “Atypical,” which centers on an 18-year-old with autism as he experiences becoming a young adult. Starring Jenifer Jason Leigh as the boy’s mother, the show joins ABC’s “Speechless” in taking a comedic look at how families—and especially mothers—protect one of their own.
Leigh—also listed as a producer for the series—will work with Keir Gilchrist, who portrays her son with autism. Michael Rapaport is set to play the dad, Bridgette Lundy-Paine will be the sister, and Amy Okuda will play a “therapist” (promotional materials don’t indicate specifics). According to “Variety,” the show begins production late this year.
